A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
