Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
