Presence
Steven Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries through this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has left the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
